The Heart of the Matter

In the past my thoughts have been published in Bible-related magazines, but I am happy to try this method of communication.

There is a Bible teacher who, when she says "heart", taps her forehead gently. These thoughts are meant to apply to that "heart", not the one that beats in our chests.

Three young counselors, including our daughter, heard of a Mexican boy who had been in a juvenile detention facility crying for a week and no one could communicate with him.One of the   counselors could speak Spanish so soon they were on their way.The boy's story was that he, an uncle, and his dad were stopped by a patrolman. They were found to have no papers. In other words they were illegals. The men were taken one place and the boy was taken to a place for juveniles. Some of his concerns were: Where are my uncle and dad? Are they going to kill me.? Will they keep me here forever? As they talked it was noticed that he rubbed his stomach. So, they asked "Does your stomach hurt?" He answered, "no, my heart hurts."

My husband was in the hospital recovering from surgery for three heart by-passes.A young nurse came in. In her few minutes visit she spoke of her future and opportunities in nursing. Then she said, "But my good friend has the neatest job.He is on the team which does heart transplants. He stands 6 feet from the table in this location.(gesture). When the heart is taken out, it is placed in his hands. He says that sometimes it is still beating."

In thinking about this later, it occurred to me that there are people in my relationships who hold my heart in their hands. Then, here am I holding the hearts of others in my hands!Sometimes we care for our physical hearts better than we do the heart that is the essence of us (Tap your forehead with  your finger.)

"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life".Proverbs 4:23

"...love one another deeply, from the heart."" I Peter 1:22b

Then I turned on the television and witnessed what I was thinking about.
